At Alliance Federal Credit Union, we believe the best way to protect yourself from fraud is to become familiar with the many techniques that criminals use to gain access to your account information. On this page, you’ll learn about current scams and how you can avoid becoming a victim of them. We will regularly update this page to keep you informed of the tricks and tools that scam artists use to try to gain access to your identity and account.

     Types of Fraud

Deactivated Account Verification Fraud

One example of a scam attempting to get the recipient to call the fraudster is an e-mail that claims to be from a financial institution stating there is a new security system to make accounts more secure and safe. The e-mail then states your card or account has been deactivated because of this new security system and asks you to call a phone number to activate the card or account. The phone number is not the financial institution's number, but rather a phone number operated by the fraudster.

Fraudulent Charges Verification Fraud

Another example is where the fraudster calls you directly and already knows some information about you like your name or address. They state they are calling from a financial institution and ask if you have a Visa or other credit card in an attempt to solicit more information from you. They then state they need to verify your account number and claim there may be fraudulent charges on your account. Finally, in this example, the fraudster will ask you to read the account number and expiration date on the front and the last three digits on the back

The Credit Union will NEVER ask you to enter your information over the telephone with an automated system.  Do not enter your information.

Important: Email Fraud Alert

06/01/2011 - NACHA E-mail

Phishing Alert! Scammers Send False NACHA E-mail.   Our IT Security Team has been receiving reports of an e-mail sent by scammers which targets random individuals and businesses, and appears to come from NACHA, the Electronic Payment Association which governs Automated Clearinghouse (electronic) transactions.

The false e-mail has the subject line “ACH transfer rejected,” and states that there is a problem with the ACH transaction the receiving individual has originated. The e-mail then directs recipients to a link which opens a false web page. The web page is really a “spoofed” version of the NACHA website. It is suspected that a virus is attached to the link; clicking on the link will infect your computer with a virus or malware.

DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK IF YOU RECEIVE THIS FALSE E-MAIL. The e-mail did not originate from NACHA, and the website is not authorized by NACHA. Below is a sample of the phishing e-mail:

From: risk@nacha.org [mailto:risk@nacha.org]
Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2011 6:17 AM
To:
Subject: ACH transfer rejected
The ACH transfer (ID: 003636885738), recently sent from your checking account (by you or any other person), was canceled by the other financial institution.

If you have received this e-mail, NACHA requests that you forward it onto abuse@nacha.org to aid in their efforts to pursue and prosecute the scammers. Then delete it immediately. If you did not click on the link, there is no reason to believe your computer has been infected. If you have clicked on the link, we strongly recommend that you perform a full scan on your computer to ensure no viruses or malware are present. If you responded to the e-mail with personal information, please call our Member Service Center at 806.798.5554 so we can take action to protect your account.

Remember, neither Alliance FCU nor any reputable business, will ever send you an e-mail asking for you to confirm your personal account information or to download and extract files. Be suspicious of any e-mail requesting personal information, asking you to click links, or download and extract files, and never provide your account number, credit card number, PIN number or any identifying information such as your Social Security Number by e-mail.
